Where Does Damus Store Keys and Data?

Damus keeps the NostrDB event store in Documents, keys in the Keychain, and relays in per account settings.

Last updated

Damus splits state by sensitivity. The Nostr event database (data.mdb plus lock file) lives in the app Documents folder and can grow into gigabytes on busy accounts. The secret key lives in the iOS Keychain, relays and prefs in account settings.

Logout wipes the keypair from the app and drops relay connections, so treat logout as destructive without a saved nsec. Recent builds exclude the event database from iCloud backups since relays resync it, which keeps cloud quotas sane.

Where Damus stores this, by platform

iOS
/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/<guid>/Documents/data.mdb

LMDB event store plus lock file. Excluded from iCloud backup by the app since relays resync it. Keys live in Keychain, never here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up my Damus identity?

Write down the nsec secret key somewhere safe before anything else. No support desk can recover a lost Nostr identity, with or without Damus.

Does Damus back up to iCloud?

Yes by design in recent builds. The event database resyncs from relays, so Damus excludes it from iCloud to save quota. Keys and settings still back up.

My global feed is empty. What is wrong?

Add relays in settings and check the global feed source. Damus only sees notes on relays it connects to, so an empty feed usually means an empty relay list.
