Where Does Gossip Store Relays and Keys?

Where the Gossip Nostr client keeps relays, keys and event cache on desktop, and how profiles split IDs.

Last updated

Gossip keeps everything in one data folder per OS: relay lists, encrypted keys and the event cache share a single database inside it. Spam filter scripts sit beside the database as plain files. Environment flags can relocate the whole tree or split profiles.

The database file looks enormous in listings because it preallocates sparsely. Check real disk use with proper tools before panicking. Back up the folder with the app closed to carry keys and relays together. Close the app before copying the data folder anywhere.

Where Gossip stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\gossip

Data root with the LMDB store, encrypted keys, relay database and filter script. Looks huge in listings due to sparse preallocation. Back up with the app closed.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/gossip

Same data root under Application Support. Profiles become subdirectories when the profile flag is used. Prune from Settings Storage.

Linux
~/.local/share/gossip

Same data root under XDG data home with the filter script beside the store. Override with the directory flag. Auto compacts weekly on startup.

Frequently asked questions

How do I run two Nostr identities in Gossip?

Launch with a named profile variable to keep a separate data subdirectory per identity. Each profile holds its own keys, relays and event cache. The directory override flag moves the whole tree elsewhere when needed.

Where are my Gossip relays versus my events?

Relays, keys and events share one LMDB store inside the data folder for your OS. Prune from Settings Storage rather than deleting files by hand. The store auto compacts weekly on startup, so manual vacuuming is rarely needed.
