Where Does Decky Loader Store Plugins?

Decky Loader lives in ~/homebrew on Steam Deck: plugins in plugins, services in services, per-plugin data in data and settings.

Last updated

Decky Loader keeps its whole world inside ~/homebrew in the Deck user's home. The plugins folder holds one directory per installed plugin. The services folder holds the loader binary itself. Per-plugin settings, runtime data, and logs fan out into settings, data, and logs.

That layout makes manual surgery easy. A plugin that breaks Gaming Mode is just a folder to delete from Desktop Mode. SteamOS updates can disable the loader service, which looks like Decky vanished; re-enabling plugin_loader brings the same ~/homebrew tree back to life.

Where Decky Loader stores this, by platform

Linux
~/homebrew/plugins

One folder per plugin, each with its own package.json. Store installs and URL installs land here alike. Delete a plugin's folder to uninstall it completely.

Linux
~/homebrew/services

The loader binary and service live here; per-plugin settings, data, and logs sit in the sibling settings, data, and logs folders. The tree survives plugin changes, though major OS updates may need a loader reinstall.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a broken plugin by hand?

Remove its folder from ~/homebrew/plugins with Decky disabled or in Desktop Mode. Re-enable the plugin_loader service (or reinstall Decky) afterwards; most plugins need no reboot to reappear.

Are third-party Decky plugins safe?

Prefer the built-in store over random zips. Decky runs whatever you install, so store review is the meaningful safety boundary. A misbehaving plugin can still be deleted from the plugins folder directly.
