Where Does Dendron Store Vaults and Config?

Dendron keeps notes as Markdown in workspace vault folders, tracked by dendron.yml at the workspace root.

Last updated

A Dendron workspace is a folder containing vaults, and each vault is a folder of Markdown notes, essentially a git repo for knowledge. The dendron.yml file at the workspace root lists the vaults and holds configuration. Backing up means copying folders, and syncing means git.

Note that active development has ceased and Dendron runs maintenance only. Your notes stay plain Markdown regardless, so nothing locks you in. Keep the id frontmatter on notes if you publish, since links and publishing depend on it.

Where Dendron stores this, by platform

Windows
<your workspace>\dendron.yml and <your workspace>\vault.*\

Workspace root holds dendron.yml plus one folder per vault, by default vault.main. Notes are .md files inside. Commit the workspace to git for history and sync. VS Code settings for Dendron live in the editor config, not the vault.

macOS
<your workspace>/dendron.yml and <your workspace>/vault.*/

Same layout on every OS since vaults are plain folders. Remote vaults clone from git URLs into the fsPath listed in dendron.yml. Move notes between vaults freely but keep their ids intact.

Linux
<your workspace>/dendron.yml and <your workspace>/vault.*/

Same layout. Self contained vault workspaces pack everything into one newer format, still experimental. Plain folders plus git remain the reliable shape.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Dendron notes?

Copy the workspace folder or push it to git. Vaults are Markdown plus dendron.yml, so any file backup works. Remote vaults re-clone from their git URLs, but local vaults exist only in your workspace folder.

Is Dendron still maintained?

Active development has ceased and the project is maintenance only. It still runs as a VS Code extension. Since notes are plain Markdown with standard frontmatter, migrating to Foam, Obsidian, or plain files is straightforward.
