Where Does Dillo Store Config and Bookmarks?

Dillo keeps dillorc, bookmarks, and cookies in ~/.dillo, with system defaults in /etc/dillo.

Last updated

Dillo predates XDG folders and uses ~/.dillo for everything personal. The main file is dillorc, copied from /etc/dillo/dillorc when you want custom search engines or scroll steps. Bookmarks, cookies, and key bindings sit beside it as plain text.

That plain text layout makes backup trivial. Copy the whole ~/.dillo folder to a new machine. Cookies stay off by default, so enable them in cookiesrc only if logins matter to you.

Where Dillo stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.dillo/dillorc

Main config. Copy from /etc/dillo/dillorc first, then edit. Search engines, fonts, and proxy options live here as commented lines.

Linux
~/.dillo

bm.txt bookmarks, cookies.txt, cookiesrc, keysrc, and style.css. Whole folder backup keeps the browser identical across machines.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a search engine to Dillo?

Edit ~/.dillo/dillorc and add a search_url line with a prefix. The manual shows DuckDuckGo examples. Restart Dillo to pick up the new shortcut.

Why does Dillo forget logins?

Cookies default to off. Edit cookiesrc to allow them. Note Dillo has no JavaScript, so many modern logins still fail regardless of cookie settings.
