Where Is the Nyxt Config File?

Nyxt keeps config.lisp and auto settings in ~/.config/nyxt, with data under ~/.local/share/nyxt.

Last updated

Nyxt stores manual settings in ~/.config/nyxt/config.lisp. You create that file by hand, plus parent folders if needed. In app tweaks from the Configure buttons land separately in auto-config.lisp in the same folder, so upgrades never eat your edits.

Browsing data follows the same split. Bookmarks, history, and auto rules sit under ~/.local/share/nyxt. Copy both trees to migrate. macOS builds use the same home relative paths.

Where Nyxt stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/nyxt/config.lisp

Hand written Lisp config. GUI changes save to auto-config.lisp beside it and load first, so config.lisp always wins on conflicts.

Linux
~/.local/share/nyxt

Bookmarks, history, and auto-rules.lisp. Back this up with the config folder for a full move to a new machine.

macOS
~/.config/nyxt/config.lisp

Same layout as Linux. Create ~/.config/nyxt if it does not exist yet, then reload config from inside Nyxt to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Where do Nyxt GUI settings go?

Into auto-config.lisp inside ~/.config/nyxt. Edit config.lisp for anything you want to override permanently. Delete auto-config.lisp to reset GUI tweaks without touching your own code.

How do I move Nyxt to a new machine?

Copy ~/.config/nyxt and ~/.local/share/nyxt to the same spots on the new host. Install matching extensions first. Version drift can break old config, so keep a backup before upgrading.
