Where Does Drawpile Store Settings and Canvases?

Drawpile keeps settings in the standard config dir while canvases live in files you save yourself.

Last updated

Drawpile sessions are collaborative and live, but finished work only exists once you save it. Canvases save as ORA and other formats to locations you choose, like any desktop art app.

Settings and brushes live in the standard config directory per platform. Session recordings capture the drawing process for playback and need saving deliberately. Save the canvas, export the recording if it matters, and the archive question answers itself.

Where Drawpile stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\drawpile\drawpile.ini

Settings, brushes, and preferences. Canvases themselves save wherever you choose through File Save; only settings live here.

Linux
~/.config/drawpile/drawpile.ini

Same split: settings in the config home, canvases wherever you save them. Session recordings need explicit saving too. If this folder is absent, Drawpile may be running portably with settings beside the executable instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep a finished drawing?

Save the canvas as ORA or another format through File Save. Session recordings need explicit saving too; the live session alone is not an archive.
