Where Does EdgeOS Store Config and Backups?
EdgeOS keeps the boot configuration in /config/config.boot, the only persistent location, with GUI backups archiving the whole /config directory.
Last updated
EdgeOS has exactly one persistent spot: /config. Everything else on the filesystem resets on reboot or upgrade. The boot configuration file config.boot inside it is what loads at startup, so all roads lead there.
The CLI separates working, active, and boot configs, and only save writes the boot file. The web interface backup downloads the entire /config directory as an archive, which also captures keys and scripts living beside config.boot. Copying that archive off the router is the whole backup strategy.
Where EdgeOS stores this, by platform
/config/config.boot
The startup configuration plus keys and scripts. Never edit config.boot by hand, use configure, commit, save. Back it up with the GUI download or save to SCP, FTP, or TFTP targets.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my EdgeRouter lose changes on reboot?
Run configure, then commit to apply and save to write the boot file. Committed but unsaved changes vanish on reboot, which is the classic EdgeOS footgun. Verify with cat /config/config.boot after saving.
How do I back up EdgeOS automatically?
Set system config-management commit-archive location to an SCP, FTP, or TFTP target. Every commit then copies config.boot off the box automatically. The GUI backup download tars the full /config tree for manual copies.
