Where Does VyOS Store Config and Revisions?

VyOS keeps the boot configuration in /config/config.boot with automatic versioned revisions, plus commit-archive copies to remote hosts when configured.

Last updated

VyOS centers everything on /config/config.boot, a single text file for the whole system. Commit applies changes to the running system, save persists them to the boot file. Skipping save means the next reboot forgets your work, the same gotcha as its EdgeOS cousin.

Versioning is where VyOS pulls ahead. Every commit keeps a local revision for rollback without any setup. Point commit-archive at an SCP or SFTP host and each commit also lands off box with a timestamped name. Between local revisions and remote archives, config loss takes real effort.

Linux
/config/config.boot

Boot config plus automatic local revisions. Edit through configure mode only. Snapshot before risky changes with save /config/backups/<name>.boot and push copies off box with save scp://....

Frequently asked questions

How do I roll back a VyOS config?

Use rollback <revision> in configuration mode, then commit and save. VyOS versions every commit automatically, so yesterday's config is still on the box. Show system commit lists the available revisions with timestamps.

Does upgrading VyOS wipe my config?

The image holds the OS, /config holds your settings, and upgrades preserve /config. Still, save a copy off the box with save scp://... before upgrading. The default file to restore is /opt/vyatta/etc/config.boot.default for a clean slate.
