Where Is the EFI System Partition Mounted?
The EFI partition mounts at /boot/efi on Linux, holding bootloaders outside the main filesystem.
Last updated
UEFI systems boot from a small FAT32 partition that lives outside every operating system. Linux mounts it at /boot/efi so bootloaders and kernels can be staged there.
Windows keeps the same partition unlettered and hidden, which confuses dual booters looking for it in Explorer. Damage here breaks booting for all installed systems at once, so mount it read write only while changing boot entries.
Where Linux stores this, by platform
/boot/efi
Mount point for the FAT32 EFI partition with EFI/BOOT and EFI vendor folders. Back up the EFI directory before bootloader surgery. fstab usually mounts it from PARTUUID.
EFI System Partition (no drive letter)
Same physical partition, hidden from Explorer. Assign a letter with mountvol or diskpart to inspect it, then remove the letter afterward to keep it protected.
Frequently asked questions
how do i back up the efi partition
Copy the EFI folder from /boot/efi on Linux or a letter mounted partition on Windows. Restoring means copying it back onto a FAT32 partition with the boot flag set.
windows update broke my linux dual boot
It likely rewrote the EFI boot order, not your files. Boot a live USB, mount /boot/efi, and reinstall your bootloader entry. Your Linux install is untouched.
