Where Does Grub2Win Store Config?
Grub2Win installs to C grub2 with grub.cfg, user sections and EFI modules. Layout and backup notes.
Last updated
Grub2Win keeps everything in one folder on C:. The installer drops about thirty megabytes at C:/grub2 with the control app, fonts, locales, themes and both EFI and BIOS boot modules. The generated config sits at the root of that tree.
Custom entries go in a separate user file that survives regeneration. Pressing Apply rebuilds grub.cfg from detected systems plus that file, so hand edits to grub.cfg itself vanish on the next apply. EFI machines also gain a small grub2win folder on the system partition with the boot manager binary.
Where Grub2Win stores this, by platform
C:\grub2\grub.cfg
Auto-generated on every Apply; put custom entries in C:\grub2\my-grub-user-section.cfg instead. EFI boot files in ESP\EFI\grub2win with a boot-order entry set default. BIOS boots chainload C:\grub2\g2bootmgr. Back up the whole C:\grub2 tree.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add a custom boot entry in Grub2Win?
Write it into C:\grub2\my-grub-user-section.cfg, then press Apply so regeneration picks it up. Entries typed directly into grub.cfg disappear on the next apply. Keep a copy of the user file outside C: before major edits.
Where are Grub2Win EFI files?
In a grub2win folder on the EFI system partition, holding the boot EFI binary plus a few modules. Encrypted Windows installs may place more there, but normal installs keep the bulk in C:\grub2. Mount the ESP explicitly to inspect it.
How do I back up Grub2Win?
Copy the whole C:\grub2 folder with its themes, fonts and user section. Note the EFI boot-order entry separately, since folder copies do not record boot priority. Restore the folder first, then reapply from the app to rebuild order.
