Where Does Ekiga Store Settings on Linux?
Ekiga stores its settings in the old GNOME GConf database, not a plain text config file. Here is where to look.
Last updated
Ekiga keeps per-user settings under ~/.gconf/apps/ekiga in the GNOME 2 GConf store. There is no ekiga.conf to edit by hand. System wide defaults live under /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/apps/ekiga, and any change made in the GUI lands in the GConf database immediately.
One caveat matters more than the path itself. Ekiga has been unmaintained for over a decade, and current distributions no longer ship it. These paths only help if you are nursing an old install or migrating accounts off one. For anything new, pick a maintained client and copy the SIP credentials across by hand.
Where Ekiga stores this, by platform
~/.gconf/apps/ekiga
Per-user accounts, codecs, and UI state in GConf XML. System defaults sit under /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/apps/ekiga. Read values with gconftool-2 since there is no flat file to open.
Frequently asked questions
where is the ekiga config file on linux
There is none. Ekiga predates the XDG config convention and writes through GConf instead. Browse ~/.gconf/apps/ekiga with gconftool-2 or the graphical editor to read or change values.
why is ekiga missing from my distro repositories
It is unmaintained. The last stable release was 4.0.1 in 2013, and most distributions dropped the package years ago. Ubuntu 20.04 and later have no ekiga package, so check Jami or Linphone for a maintained SIP client.
