Where Does ESP-IDF Store Tools and Projects?
ESP-IDF keeps tools in ~/.espressif and the framework wherever you cloned it, with builds inside each project.
Last updated
ESP-IDF splits into three homes: the framework repo you cloned, the tools directory its installer created, and a build folder inside every project. Each version of the framework pairs with its own tool set.
The export script ties them together per terminal session. Skipping it is the classic reason builds fail with missing tools right after a fresh install.
Where ESP-IDF stores this, by platform
~/.espressif
Toolchains, Python environments and component downloads. The framework itself commonly sits at ~/esp/esp-idf with projects elsewhere. Run export.sh per shell before building.
~/.espressif
Same layout on Mac. Multiple framework versions share the tools folder with versioned subdirectories, so disk use grows per release you keep.
%USERPROFILE%\.espressif
Same tree on Windows with an export batch file instead. The VS Code extension manages its own copies, which can double disk use beside a manual install.
Frequently asked questions
where are esp-idf build outputs
In the build folder inside each project directory. Delete it for a clean rebuild. Flash binaries like firmware.bin sit at its root when done.
can i have multiple esp-idf versions installed
Yes. Clone each to its own folder like ~/esp/v5.1 and run that version's export script in the working shell. The tools directory shares what it safely can.
