Where Does Espanso Store Its Config?

Espanso config and snippet folders on every OS, and the command that reveals the live path.

Last updated

Espanso splits what from how: match/base.yml holds your snippets, config/default.yml holds behavior, both under one per OS root (%APPDATA%\espanso on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/espanso on Mac, ~/.config/espanso on Linux).

Version upgrades muddy the Mac side: v0 to v2 migration left a compat dir in ~/Library/Preferences/espanso on some machines. When in doubt run espanso path config and trust its answer over any guide. Moving the folder by hand works only while Espanso is stopped.

Where Espanso stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\espanso\

config\default.yml (behavior) plus match\base.yml (snippets) inside. Verify with espanso path config. Move only while Espanso is stopped.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/espanso/

Same config/ plus match/ layout. Old installs may still use ~/Library/Preferences/espanso from the v0 era; espanso path reveals which is live.

Linux
~/.config/espanso/

Same layout ($XDG_CONFIG_HOME respected). Verify with espanso path config; hand moves require Espanso stopped first.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put new Espanso snippets?

In match/base.yml (or a new .yml beside it) under the espanso root for your OS. Snippets reload automatically; behavior options go in config/default.yml instead.

Which espanso folder is live on my Mac?

Run espanso path config. Application Support is canonical for v2, but migrated machines can carry the old Preferences copy, and only the command knows for sure.
