Where Does Eza Store Config and Themes?

Eza theme config on Linux, macOS and Windows plus env based options.

Last updated

Eza reads options from env vars first and a theme file second. There is no database or cache to back up.

Themes live as theme.yml under the XDG style config home per OS. Most users never create one and rely on flags plus shell aliases. Copying the file moves colors between machines.

Where Eza stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\eza\theme.yml

Theme file (create it when missing). Day to day options come from EZA_* env vars and aliases in the shell profile. Exact folder casing may vary by build.

macOS
~/.config/eza/theme.yml

Same XDG style path via Homebrew installs. Env vars override file values. Copy theme.yml to move colors; aliases stay in zshrc or fish config.

Linux
~/.config/eza/theme.yml

Follows XDG config home. No history or cache exists. Check man eza_colors when hues surprise you; names shift between releases.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Eza config file?

At theme.yml under the eza config dir above, created by hand. Most behavior comes from flags and env vars. The file only tweaks colors.

How do I reset Eza colors?

Rename theme.yml and unset EZA_ vars, then open a fresh shell. Defaults return. Shell aliases live separately and need their own cleanup.
