Where Does Warp Store Settings and Themes?

Where the Warp terminal keeps settings.toml, themes, workflows, and logs on macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Last updated

Warp splits its files by platform convention. macOS Stable keeps everything under ~/.warp, Linux follows XDG with settings in ~/.config/warp-terminal and data in ~/.local/share/warp-terminal, and Windows uses %LOCALAPPDATA%\warp. The file that matters most is settings.toml at each root.

Preview channel builds mirror the layout with -preview suffixed folders, except a shared ~/.warp carve out for MCP config and skills. Mixing Stable and Preview paths is the usual reason a migrated theme does not appear.

Where Warp stores this, by platform

macOS
~/.warp/settings.toml

settings.toml plus themes/, workflows/, and launch_configurations/ underneath. Preview uses ~/.warp-preview/ instead. The docs file locations page lists every file when a full wipe is needed.

Linux
~/.config/warp-terminal/settings.toml

settings.toml with keybindings.yaml beside it; data (themes, workflows) under ~/.local/share/warp-terminal. Logs and the local database sit in ~/.local/state/warp-terminal. Preview appends -preview to each folder.

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\warp\Warp\config\settings.toml

Stable settings at this path with data under %APPDATA%\warp\Warp\data. Preview uses WarpPreview siblings. Copy home directory dotfiles into these locations when moving from macOS or Linux.

Frequently asked questions

where is the warp settings file

Edit settings.toml in place (~/.warp/settings.toml on macOS Stable, ~/.config/warp-terminal/settings.toml on Linux). Most options also exist in the in app Settings pages, which write the same file. Back it up first; a malformed TOML resets to defaults.

where do warp custom themes go

In the themes folder of the data directory (~/.local/share/warp-terminal/themes on Linux, ~/.warp/themes on macOS). Drop a YAML theme file there and pick it in Settings > Appearance. Preview channel builds use -preview suffixed folders.

how do i migrate warp to a new computer

Copy settings.toml plus the data folder (themes, workflows, launch configs) to the matching paths on the new machine, then sign in. Account synced items like blocks history arrive separately after login.
