Where Does FCEUX Store Config and Saves?

FCEUX portable config plus sav and fcs folders beside the executable.

Last updated

FCEUX keeps the old portable faith: fceux.cfg plus sav, fcs, movie and screenshot folders all sit next to the executable. No registry keys, no AppData wandering. The folder copies between machines with everything intact.

Battery saves deserve a special mention because they live by the ROMs' rules rather than the emulator's. A .sav file works in other NES emulators, which makes it the interchange format for moving progress across programs. Save states stay FCEUX only, tied to its exact emulation internals.

Where FCEUX stores this, by platform

Windows
[FCEUX folder]\fceux.cfg

The cfg holds video, input and directory overrides in plain text. Battery .sav files follow the ROMs while numbered .fcs states stay in the states folder. Copy the emulator folder plus ROM folders for everything.

Frequently asked questions

how do i move fceux to a new pc

Copy the whole FCEUX folder with the emulator closed. Config, battery saves, save states, movies and screenshots travel together, since portable layout is the default rather than an option.

sav versus fcs files in fceux

Battery saves use .sav beside the ROM directory setup, while save states use numbered .fcs files in the states folder. The first survives across emulators, the second only loads back into FCEUX itself.
