Where Are Final Fantasy XVI Save Files Located?
FFXVI saves disguised as PNG files on PC, and why opening them proves nothing.
Last updated
FFXVI saves on PC in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XVI\Steam\[Steam-ID]: numbered files plus auto saves, 50 manual and 10 auto slots. The Epic build swaps Steam for an EOS folder.
The files end in .png but open as garbage: encrypted binary with a hash check, not screenshots. Controlled Folder Access silently blocks writes, which reads as saves vanishing. Steam Cloud mirrors the tree per its UFS manifest, so the out of sync prompt decides conflicts.
Where Final Fantasy XVI stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XVI\Steam\[Steam-ID]\
[Steam-ID] is your 64 bit numeric Steam account (AppID 2515020). Numbered .png saves (encrypted, hash checked) plus autos. Epic uses ...\FINAL FANTASY XVI\EOS instead. No native Linux or Mac build exists.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit FFXVI save files?
Not by hand. Despite the .png extension they are encrypted with integrity checks, so edits corrupt them. Use in game New Game Plus and backups instead of hex experiments.
FFXVI won't save on PC. What blocks it?
Windows Controlled Folder Access is the usual culprit: it silently denies Documents writes. Whitelist the game (or disable the feature) and saves land normally again.
