Where Does the Files App Store Settings and Logs?

Files keeps settings and logs in a LocalState folder whose package name changes per edition and install method.

Last updated

Files stores its settings and logs in a LocalState folder inside its MSIX package directory, and the package name changes with the edition. Store, sideload, stable and preview builds each get their own folder, which means running two editions side by side keeps two fully separate configurations.

That separation is the key detail for troubleshooting. Resetting the stable build never touches preview settings, and log collection for a bug report must come from the LocalState of the edition that actually crashed.

Where Files stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Packages\49306atecsolution.FilesUWP_et10x9a9vyk8t\LocalState

Store stable edition. Sideload stable uses Files_1y0xx7n9077q4, preview builds use their own FilesPreview families. Settings.json and logs sit together here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset Files settings without reinstalling?

Close Files, delete settings.json from the LocalState folder of your edition, and relaunch. Tabs and layout reset while your actual files stay untouched.

Where is the Files log file for bug reports?

In the same LocalState folder, or via Settings > About > Open log location when the UI still opens. Match the package family to your edition.
