Where Does FL Studio Save Projects?

FL Studio user data and project paths on Windows and macOS, including the Backup folder used for autosaves and recovery.

Last updated

Since FL Studio 20, all user data lives outside the program install folder, inside Documents/Image-Line. Projects, recorded audio, rendered files, presets and settings each get their own subfolder there. Older FL 11 and 12 installs used the Program Files tree instead.

Autosaves go to Projects/Backup. If FL Studio crashes, look in the Browser under Backup or open that folder directly. You can move the whole data tree under Options > File settings, but keep it on a fast local drive. Cloud synced folders cause save errors.

Where FL Studio stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Image-Line\FL Studio\Projects

Autosaves are in Projects\Backup. The parent Image-Line\FL Studio folder also holds Audio and Settings. Avoid moving it to OneDrive, which causes save errors.

macOS
~/Documents/Image-Line/FL Studio/Projects

Same layout as Windows. Change it under Options > File settings > User data folder if needed, and let FL Studio migrate the files for you.

Frequently asked questions

Where are FL Studio autosaves and crash backups?

In Projects/Backup under your user data folder. Use File > Revert to last autosave after a crash, or grab the file straight from the Backup folder in Finder or Explorer.

Can I store FL Studio projects on an external drive?

Yes for finished .flp files, but keep the active user data folder on a fast internal drive. Point Browser extra search folders at the external drive so samples stay linked without moving settings.
