Where Does LMMS Save Projects?

LMMS projects, samples and config paths on Windows, macOS and Linux, and how the working directory setting moves them.

Last updated

LMMS centers everything on a working directory with projects, samples, presets and soundfonts beneath it. Windows defaults into the user profile tree, while Mac and Linux builds lean on home folders. The .mmpz project files compress the XML song data.

Change the root under Edit > Settings > Paths and LMMS migrates future saves there. Old projects stay where they were, so move them by hand once. Back up the whole working directory to carry songs plus custom samples together. SoundFont files in the samples tree travel with songs on backup.

Where LMMS stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\lmms\projects

Config lives at C:\Users\[Username]\.lmmsrc.xml. Samples sit in Documents\lmms\samples beside projects. Keep both when migrating machines.

macOS
~/Documents/lmms/projects

Same Documents layout as Windows. Config is at ~/.lmmsrc.xml. VST paths need repointing after moves since plugin folders differ.

Linux
~/lmms/projects

Default root is directly under home rather than Documents on many builds. Confirm yours in Settings > Paths before scripting backups.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my LMMS samples missing after a move?

Projects reference absolute sample paths. Recreate the same folder tree or use the same working directory root, then relink once from inside LMMS.

Where is the LMMS config file?

At ~/.lmmsrc.xml on Mac and Linux, C:\Users\[Username]\.lmmsrc.xml on Windows. Back it up with the working directory to keep paths and audio settings.
