Where Does FocusWriter Store Themes and Sessions?
Where FocusWriter keeps themes, sessions and preferences on Windows, Mac and Linux, and what to back up.
Last updated
FocusWriter separates program state from your writing. Themes, daily goals, session memory and preferences live in a small config folder. Your actual pages live wherever you saved them. The config folder stays tiny while documents grow elsewhere.
That split confuses restores. Copying config brings back the look and the recent list, but not the documents. Grab both halves with the app closed for a real backup. Themes are plain files, so single themes copy cleanly between machines.
Where FocusWriter stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\focuswriter
Themes and preferences in one folder. Close the app before copying. Documents stay in your chosen save locations, not here.
~/Library/Application Support/focuswriter
Same config layout under Application Support. Use Finder Go to Folder to reach it. Daily goals and session state copy with the parent.
~/.config/focuswriter
Same config layout under XDG config. Respects custom XDG_CONFIG_HOME. Themes are plain files inside, easy to copy singly.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move FocusWriter themes to a new machine?
Close FocusWriter and copy its config folder elsewhere. Themes, session memory and preferences travel together. Documents themselves stay where you saved them, so back those up separately.
My text is gone after a move. Did the config copy fail?
FocusWriter remembers open files, it does not store them inside its config. The text lives in the .odt or .txt files you saved. Config holds window state and theme choices only.
