Where Does Fortnite Store Config and Settings?

Fortnite keeps graphics and preference settings in GameUserSettings.ini under FortniteGame. Path plus the read-only fix.

Last updated

Fortnite's settings live in one Unreal-standard folder: LocalAppData\FortniteGame\Saved\Config\WindowsClient. GameUserSettings.ini holds resolution, quality presets, audio and language; Engine.ini and Input.ini sit beside it for renderer and keybind overrides. Replays are a different system in a different folder, covered in their own post.

The famous quirk is settings that refuse to stick, which Epic's own support traces to the file's read-only flag. Players also set that flag deliberately to lock in hand tweaks, then forget and blame the menu. Either way the fix is the same Properties checkbox. Fortnite on PC is Windows-only, so there is exactly one platform to document.

Where Fortnite stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\FortniteGame\Saved\Config\WindowsClient

GameUserSettings.ini is the main file; Engine.ini and Input.ini beside it hold renderer and keybind overrides. If settings will not stick, clear the read-only flag per Epic's support article. Set the flag deliberately to lock in hand tweaks. Replays live elsewhere and are covered separately.

Frequently asked questions

why does fortnite not save my settings

Uncheck read-only on GameUserSettings.ini. Epic's own support article gives this exact fix: open %localappdata%\FortniteGame\Saved\Config\WindowsClient, right-click the file, clear Read-only in Properties. The flag is also deliberately set by players locking in tweaks, which then looks like the game ignoring the menu.

how do i force fortnite language via config

Open GameUserSettings.ini and append an [Internationalization] section with Culture set to your language code, like Culture=en for English. Epic documents this exact edit for language that will not stick. Save while the game is closed or it overwrites your change on exit.

how do i move fortnite settings to a new pc

Copy GameUserSettings.ini and Engine.ini from the same WindowsClient folder to the new PC. Resolution, quality presets, keybinds and audio travel with them. Your locker, Battle Pass and stats are server-side and need no backup. Expect a shader recompile on first launch with different hardware.
