Where Does Fritzing Keep Sketches and Parts?

Fritzing sketches are fzz zip files wherever you save them. Custom parts and bins live in Documents Fritzing, safe from upgrades.

Last updated

Fritzing keeps user content in two places. Sketches are fzz files wherever you save them, each a renamed zip holding the fz sketch XML plus custom part files and code. Bins are simple lists of parts in fzb files with the same structure.

Your own parts and bins live in the Documents Fritzing folder, deliberately outside the install so upgrades never wipe them. A hidden app storage folder holds generated parts and open sketch caches, but you rarely need to touch it. Use Help, Import parts and bins from old version after upgrades if anything looks missing.

Where Fritzing stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Fritzing

Your sketches, parts, and bins. Custom parts sit in the parts subfolder, sketches wherever you save them.

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Fritzing

Hidden app storage for generated parts and open file caches. Custom parts moved out of here into Documents in modern releases.

macOS
/Users/<username>/Documents/Fritzing

Same Documents layout on Mac. Bins you create also land here for easy editing with outside tools.

Linux
/home/<username>/Documents/Fritzing

Same Documents layout on Linux. Example sketches ship inside the install folder if you want to study the format.

Frequently asked questions

How do I share a Fritzing sketch?

Send the fzz file. It bundles the sketch plus any custom parts, so the recipient sees exactly your circuit. Unzip it to inspect the inner fz XML.

Where do my custom parts go?

Save it as a new part. Custom parts live in Documents Fritzing parts, outside the app install, so they persist across versions.
