Where Does LibrePCB Store Workspaces and Projects?

LibrePCB workspaces, projects and libraries on Windows, macOS and Linux, and why the workspace matters more.

Last updated

LibrePCB keeps almost everything in a workspace folder you pick on first launch. Settings, libraries and optionally projects live there. The default sits directly in your home directory, and you can move it later.

Each PCB project is its own directory, ideally under the workspace projects/ subfolder so it shows in the control panel file explorer. That layout is the reliable backup unit. Copying stray .lp files without the workspace loses library links.

Where LibrePCB stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\LibrePCB-Workspace\projects

Default workspace from the first run wizard, commonly under your user profile. Projects belong in the projects/ subfolder. Check File > Workspace Settings if you changed the location.

macOS
~/LibrePCB-Workspace/projects

Same workspace concept as Windows. Accept the wizard default or pick your own spot. The projects/ subfolder is what the control panel file explorer displays.

Linux
~/LibrePCB-Workspace/projects

Workspace is a plain directory, so Dropbox, Git or rsync all work. Keep the whole workspace together rather than cherry picking project folders.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up LibrePCB work?

Copy the whole workspace directory with LibrePCB closed. That keeps settings, libraries and every project under projects/ together. Single project folders miss library links.

Can I move a LibrePCB workspace between OSes?

Yes. LibrePCB workspaces are platform independent. Copy the workspace folder to the new machine and open it there. Keep a spare copy until the first launch succeeds.
