Where Are Gears of War: E-Day Save Files Located?

E-Day splits saves by store: a Microsoft folder for Steam copies and a package folder for Game Pass, plus config trees for each.

Last updated

E-Day stores the Steam and Microsoft Store builds in completely different places, which surprises people moving between Game Pass and Steam. The Steam build uses a Microsoft folder inside LocalAppData, with a per-user ID level inside the config tree. The Store build splits the same way Xbox ports always do: settings under a FairlightConcept folder, saves inside the app package.

PCGamingWiki documents all four paths plus the Proton prefix, and the page was verified against the launch build. Config edits go in the Config trees while the game is closed. Keep the two stores separate in your head and you will stop looking in the wrong tree.

Where Gears of War: E-Day stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Gears of War E-Day\Saves

Campaign and multiplayer progress land here. The folder appears after the first save, so run the game once before hunting for it.

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Gears of War E-Day\Steam\<user-id>\Saved\Config\Windows

Graphics and input INIs for the Steam build. The user ID segment varies per account, so open the Steam folder and pick the ID you see.

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.Fairlightbasegame_8wekyb3d8bbwe\SystemAppData\wgs

Microsoft Store and Game Pass copies. Packaged builds write saves into SystemAppData instead of LocalAppData.

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\FairlightConcept\Saved\Config\WinGDK

Settings for the Store build. FairlightConcept is the internal project name, which is why searching for Gears finds nothing here.

Linux
<SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/3010850/pfx/

Steam Play prefix, app ID 3010850. The Windows paths above are mirrored inside it. Cloud copies may also sit under ~/.steam/steam/userdata/3010850/.

Frequently asked questions

Can I copy a Steam save into the Game Pass version?

No. The Steam copy saves under a Microsoft folder in LocalAppData, while the Game Pass copy uses its Xbox package folder. Copying files between them does not transfer progress; link an Xbox account for roaming saves instead.

Does E-Day back up saves to the cloud?

Steam Cloud covers the Steam copy and Xbox Cloud covers the Microsoft Store copy. Either can still desync after a crash, so a manual copy of the Saves folder before a reinstall is cheap insurance.

Where are E-Day saves on Steam Deck or Linux?

Use the Proton prefix with app ID 3010850. The Windows folder structure is mirrored inside it, and Steam Cloud may also keep copies under userdata for the same ID.
