Where Does gedit Store Settings on Linux?

gedit keeps preferences in dconf under /org/gnome/gedit/, physically in ~/.config/dconf/user, dumped and loaded with dconf commands.

Last updated

gedit has no settings file you can open in a text editor. Its preferences live in dconf under the /org/gnome/gedit/ branch, stored physically in the binary database at ~/.config/dconf/user.

That surprises people who copy ~/.config around and find gedit unchanged. Copying that database file works but drags every GNOME app setting along with it. The cleaner move is dumping just the gedit branch with dconf and loading it where you need it.

Where gedit stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/dconf/user

Browse it with dconf-editor or the dconf command line. Plugins, fonts, tab width and autosave toggles all live under this branch, not in flat files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move gedit settings to another machine?

Run dconf dump /org/gnome/gedit/ > gedit-dump.dconf on the source machine, then dconf load /org/gnome/gedit/ < gedit-dump.dconf on the target. Match gedit versions first, since keys drift between releases.

How do I reset gedit to defaults?

Run dconf reset -f /org/gnome/gedit/ with gedit closed. That wipes its preferences branch back to defaults without touching anything else in your dconf database.
