Where Are Gothic 3 Save Files Located?

Gothic 3 keeps saves in a lowercase gothic3 Documents folder, with the Community Patch effectively mandatory.

Last updated

Gothic 3 stores saves in Documents\gothic3, all lowercase, with UserOptions.ini config beside them. Steam Cloud and GOG Galaxy both sync the tree under app ID 39500, and Linux runs through Proton with the same relative layout.

The folder name trips up searchers: Gothic3 with a capital goes to the Forsaken Gods expansion instead, a separate tree entirely. Saves only exist after the first successful write, so a missing folder usually means the game never saved, not that it saved elsewhere. Run once, save once, then look.

Where Gothic 3 stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\gothic3

Saves plus UserOptions.ini in one lowercase folder. Forsaken Gods uses its own Gothic3ForsakenGods tree. Cloud syncs under app 39500. Patch before playing; old saves break across patch lines.

Linux
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/39500/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/gothic3

Same Documents-relative layout inside the Proton prefix for app 39500. Community Patch guidance applies identically on Linux.

Frequently asked questions

Should I install the Community Patch?

Install Community Patch 1.75 first; it is effectively required on modern Windows. Start a new game afterward, since old saves from unpatched builds will not load. Back up before patching.

My quicksave corrupted. Can I rescue it?

Open the damaged QuickSave in the folder and restore a copy, or fall back to a manual save. The Steam thread fix is literally file surgery: duplicate a healthy slot over the broken one with the game closed.
