Where Are Gothic Save Files Located?

Gothic Steam saves live in AppData\Local\Gothic\Saved\SaveGames, while classic installs kept them in Saves.

Last updated

The Steam release of Gothic 1 stores saves in local app data under a Gothic folder, a modern layout the 2001 original never had. Classic installs wrote into a Saves folder inside the game directory instead.

Old installs carry a famous trap: the game crashes on save when the Saves folder is missing. Creating it by hand in the install directory fixes saving instantly. Back up whichever layout your build uses before modding anything.

Where Gothic stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Gothic\Saved\SaveGames

Steam version location. Classic disk and GOG installs use Saves inside the game folder, sometimes redirected by VirtualStore on old Windows. Copy the whole folder with the game closed.

Frequently asked questions

gothic crashes whenever i save, how do i fix it

Create a folder named Saves inside the Gothic install directory and try again. Old builds assume it exists and crash writing to a path that was never created. Steam release players should check the AppData path instead.

how do i back up gothic 1 saves

Copy the SaveGames folder from AppData for the Steam build, or the Saves folder from the install directory for classic builds. Either one restores fully when pasted back.
