Where Does Apache Guacamole Store Config?
Guacamole reads guacamole.properties inside GUACAMOLE_HOME, etc guacamole by default. Docker setups configure it with env vars instead.
Last updated
Guacamole splits config into a home directory and one main file. GUACAMOLE_HOME holds everything, defaulting to etc guacamole on plain Linux installs. Inside it, guacamole.properties sets the guacd host and port plus every auth extension option.
Docker changes the workflow. The official image defaults GUACAMOLE_HOME to etc guacamole inside the container and reads most settings from environment variables. You still mount your own home folder for extensions and user mappings, but routine options become container env vars.
Where Apache Guacamole stores this, by platform
/etc/guacamole/guacamole.properties
Main config file for bare metal installs. At minimum it sets guacd-hostname and guacd-port plus the auth provider.
/etc/guacamole/extensions
Extensions, lib folder, and user mapping files live beside the properties file under the same home.
/var/lib/tomcat/.guacamole/guacamole.properties
Fallback home when GUACAMOLE_HOME is unset: .guacamole under the servlet container user's home. Tomcat installs often land here.
Frequently asked questions
Where is guacamole.properties?
Check the GUACAMOLE_HOME env var or system property first. The file lives directly inside that folder. Etc guacamole is only the default when nothing overrides it.
How do I configure Guacamole in Docker?
Set the matching env var in upper case with underscores. The Docker image maps each property to a variable automatically, so no file edit is needed.
