Where Does Vinagre Store Bookmarks?

Vinagre stores bookmarks and history under the user config home on Linux. Passwords go to the GNOME keyring, not the bookmark file.

Last updated

Vinagre is the older GNOME remote desktop viewer for VNC, RDP, SPICE, and SSH. It supports tabbed connections with bookmarks and a history of recent hosts. Passwords integrate with the GNOME keyring rather than sitting in plaintext.

Bookmark storage moved over the years. Early releases used the gnome2 folder, later ones moved to the XDG config home. If your connections vanished after a distro upgrade, the old file is probably still sitting in the previous location waiting to be moved. GNOME Connections replaces Vinagre on new installs.

Where Vinagre stores this, by platform

Linux
/home/<username>/.config/vinagre

Bookmarks and history per the developer move to XDG config home. Older installs may still have the file under ~/.gnome2. Exact filename varies by release, so check the app settings if this does not match.

Linux
/home/<username>/.local/share/keyrings/login.keyring

Connection passwords live here, not in the bookmark file. Deleting the keyring entry forces a fresh password prompt.

Frequently asked questions

My saved connections are gone after an upgrade. Where are they?

Check the config home folder for the vinagre entry and confirm you are looking at the same user. Modern versions moved it out of the old gnome2 folder.

Can I open a connection from a file?

Yes, through .vnc files. Double click one in Files or pass it with the file flag to connect straight from the file.
