Where Does Guitar Pro Keep Tabs and Backups?
Guitar Pro scores live wherever you save them, while crash backups hide in app data. Both locations on Windows and Mac, plus recovery steps.
Last updated
Your Guitar Pro scores (.gp files) live wherever you saved them. The app's homepage can index one folder of your choice under Local Files, but it never moves your tabs. Think of that list as a bookmark, not a vault.
The files people actually hunt for are the automatic backups. After a crash, check the Autobackups folder in app data before rewriting anything. Strip the .bak extension down to .gp and open it. Versions before 8.1.4 on Windows used %AppData% instead of %LocalAppData%, so look in both if the first comes up empty.
Where Guitar Pro stores this, by platform
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Arobas Music\guitarpro8
Crash backups sit in the Autobackups and backups subfolders. On versions older than 8.1.4 the same folder lives under %AppData% instead. Remove the .bak extension to reopen a rescued file.
~/Library/Application Support/Arobas Music/guitarpro8
Same backups and Autobackups subfolders as Windows. Open it with Finder > Go > Go to Folder, since ~/Library stays hidden by default.
Frequently asked questions
How do I recover an unsaved Guitar Pro file after a crash?
Open the app-data folder above and look in Autobackups, then backups. Copy the newest match elsewhere, rename it from .bak to .gp, and open it in Guitar Pro. Save it to your scores folder right away so the next crash has something to build on.
Where should I keep my Guitar Pro tabs?
Anywhere you like, then point the homepage's Local Files section at that folder with Choose a folder. Scores stay plain .gp files on disk, which makes them easy to back up with any sync tool or external drive.
