Where Does GZDoom Store Config and Saves?

GZDoom 4.9 and later keep gzdoom.ini in Documents My Games and saves in Saved Games. Drop a portable ini beside the exe instead.

Last updated

GZDoom moved its files in version 4.9 and the old guides mislead. Current builds write the ini to Documents My Games GZDoom on Windows and keep saves under Saved Games GZDoom in per game subfolders. Pre 4.9 builds kept everything beside the exe.

Linux follows XDG with the config under home config gzdoom. IWADs can live anywhere once listed in the ini search paths. Portable mode on any OS is one renamed ini next to the binary. Soundfonts and autoload mods resolve relative to the ini location.

Where GZDoom stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\GZDoom\gzdoom.ini

Main config since 4.9. Holds IWAD search paths, autoload mods, and video settings.

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\GZDoom

Savegames as zds files in per game folders. Back up the whole GZDoom tree here to keep every campaign.

Linux
/home/<username>/.config/gzdoom/gzdoom.ini

Linux config and wads home. Drop IWADs here for zero config pickup, or list folders in the ini.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make GZDoom portable?

Copy gzdoom_portable.ini next to gzdoom.exe. That file then wins over the Documents location, which is ideal for USB installs.

Where do I put Doom wad files?

Add wad folders under the IWAD search section of the ini. GZDoom scans those paths at launch instead of needing wads beside the exe.
