Where Does Ren'Py Store Saves and Projects?
Ren'Py games save in %APPDATA%\RenPy on Windows and ~/.renpy elsewhere, while projects stay in your chosen directory.
Last updated
Ren'Py splits the SDK from everything players touch. Projects and the launcher SDK live wherever you unzipped them, while game saves go to a shared RenPy folder in the platform data directory.
Each game's saves sit under a folder matching its save directory name, which usually mirrors the project name. Copying that folder between machines carries progress over with no import step.
Where Ren'Py stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\RenPy
One folder per game inside, named by save directory. Projects stay in the SDK folder you chose. Back up both to preserve work and progress together.
~/Library/RenPy
Mac equivalent holding the same per game folders. Use Go to Folder in Finder. SDK location is independent, commonly Applications or Documents.
~/.renpy
Home directory folder with per game saves. Persistent data shared across playthroughs sits in the same tree, so back it up whole.
Frequently asked questions
how do i back up renpy game saves
Copy the RenPy data folder for your OS with games closed. Each game subfolder restores on its own when pasted back to the same path.
where are renpy projects stored
Wherever you told the launcher, shown in its preferences. The SDK default suggests a folder, but projects move freely as long as the launcher points at the new location.
