Where Are Half-Life: Alyx Save Files Located?
Alyx keeps per slot folders inside the install dir, not userdata. The SAVE path plus the Linux case gotcha.
Last updated
Half-Life: Alyx stores saves inside its own install folder at game/hlvr/SAVE, with one numbered slot folder (S0, S1, and so on) per save slot plus a personal.cfg each. That surprises players who check Steam userdata first, where many games keep saves but Alyx does not.
Steam Cloud syncs the SAVE tree, which covers migrations. Native Linux builds lowercase the names to save/s0, so copying a Windows SAVE folder onto Linux needs a rename pass. Back up the whole SAVE folder to preserve every slot at once.
Where Half-Life: Alyx stores this, by platform
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life Alyx\game\hlvr\SAVE
Per slot S* subfolders with personal.cfg inside. Steam Cloud mirrors it. Adjust the head of the path when the library lives on another drive.
Frequently asked questions
does half-life alyx use steam cloud saves
Yes, the SAVE folder syncs through Steam Cloud. Keep it enabled when moving machines. Cloud and local copies can desync with two accounts on one PC, so compare timestamps before overwriting.
moving alyx saves from windows to linux
Copy SAVE over, rename it to save, and lowercase the slot folders (S0 becomes s0). The native Linux build expects the lowercase tree and ignores the Windows casing.
