Where Is the i3blocks Config File?

Where i3blocks looks for its config on Linux, and how blocklets and scripts plug into i3bar.

Last updated

i3blocks executes script blocks and pipes the output into i3bar. Its config is an INI-style file at ~/.config/i3blocks/config, with /etc/i3blocks.conf as the shipped sample.

The power is per-block intervals. Clocks poll every few seconds while package counts run every half hour. Copy the sample, then tune intervals before adding fancy scripts; chatty blocks drain laptops fast.

Where i3blocks stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/i3blocks/config

User config with one section per block (command, interval, format, markup). System sample at /etc/i3blocks.conf. Scripts referenced inside should live beside the config.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up i3blocks?

Copy /etc/i3blocks.conf to ~/.config/i3blocks/config and edit the copy. Each [name] block sets command, interval, and format. Point i3 at it with status_command i3blocks -c ~/.config/i3blocks/config.

Where do blocklet scripts live?

Scripts live wherever you put them; the config only references their paths. Keep them in ~/.config/i3blocks/scripts so config and code move together. Mark them executable or the block silently renders empty.
