Where Is the i3status Config File?
Where i3status looks for its config on Linux, and how it pairs with i3bar in the i3 config.
Last updated
i3status renders the status line that i3bar displays. Its config lives at ~/.config/i3status/config for users, with /etc/i3status.conf as the system sample. The i3 config decides which one runs via status_command.
Copy the sample down before editing. Order blocks by importance since narrow screens truncate the right side first. Interval settings per module control CPU wakeups, so avoid one-second polling on battery.
Where i3status stores this, by platform
~/.config/i3status/config
User config defining general, order, and module sections. Referenced from the i3 bar block via status_command. System sample at /etc/i3status.conf.
Frequently asked questions
How do I customize i3status?
Copy /etc/i3status.conf to ~/.config/i3status/config and edit the copy. Point your i3 bar block at it with status_command i3status -c ~/.config/i3status/config, then reload i3. The user file wins once it exists.
Can I switch between i3status and i3blocks?
Yes, and many people do. i3status prints text and i3blocks runs scripts, but both feed i3bar through the same status_command line. Swap the command and keep the bar block; module syntax is the only part to relearn.
