Where Are Linux initramfs Images Stored?
Linux boots through initramfs images in the boot directory, rebuilt automatically on kernel updates.
Last updated
The initramfs is a small filesystem the kernel loads before the real root, carrying the drivers needed to find and mount it. The images live in the boot directory next to the kernels they match.
Package managers regenerate the image on kernel updates, which is why boot entries multiply over time. Old kernels and their images are safe to remove once the new one proves itself. When boot fails early, the rescue prompt is already running from this image.
Where Linux stores this, by platform
/boot/initramfs-*
Boot images matched per installed kernel. Regenerated on kernel updates. Remove old kernel packages to clean stale images; never delete the running kernel's files.
Frequently asked questions
The system drops to initramfs rescue on boot. How do I fix it?
Rerun the initramfs generator for your distro and reboot. A stale or corrupt image drops you to a rescue shell, and regenerating it fixes most such boots.
