Where Does Inshellisense Store Config and Cache?
Inshellisense reads ~/.config/inshellisense/rc.toml and caches specs under XDG data directories on all platforms.
Last updated
Inshellisense configures through a TOML file. The modern path is ~/.config/inshellisense/rc.toml, with ~/.inshellisenserc as the legacy alternative. Generated resources moved to the XDG data directory on fresh installs.
Old installs keep using ~/.inshellisense when that folder exists, so plugins keep working. Windows stays on that legacy path too. The reinit command performs the migration when you are ready.
Where Inshellisense stores this, by platform
~/.config/inshellisense/rc.toml (data in ~/.local/share/inshellisense)
TOML config plus generated specs under the data dir. Legacy installs use ~/.inshellisense. Run reinit to migrate. Keep shell init last in your rc file.
~/.config/inshellisense/rc.toml (data in ~/.local/share/inshellisense)
Same TOML config and XDG data layout. Legacy ~/.inshellisense still works when present. Use Go to Folder for hidden config dirs.
~/.inshellisenserc (resources in ~/.inshellisense)
Config via ~/.inshellisenserc or the XDG rc.toml. Resources stay under ~/.inshellisense on Windows. Add the init line to your PowerShell profile.
Frequently asked questions
How do I customize keybindings?
Create rc.toml at ~/.config/inshellisense/rc.toml and add keybinding or suggestion settings there. Run the doctor command to verify. Keep the plugin init as the last line in your shell rc file.
How do I migrate from the old ~/.inshellisense folder?
Run the reinit command. It moves legacy resources into the XDG data directory. New installs already use the XDG path, so only older setups need this.
