Where Do Instagram Downloads Go?

Where Instagram saves downloads and data exports on Android and iPhone, and the gallery gotcha.

Last updated

Instagram has three different saves that land in three places. Browser or downloader saves go to the system Downloads folder. In app camera saves can land in Movies/Instagram or DCIM depending on phone and settings. Full data exports arrive as a separate archive you download yourself.

The common frustration is a successful download that never appears in gallery. Most gallery apps only scan DCIM and Pictures, so a file in Download looks missing until you move it there or enable the folder in Google Photos.

Where Instagram stores this, by platform

Android
/storage/emulated/0/Download

Browser and downloader saves land here as MP4 or JPG. Move files to DCIM/Instagram to surface them in gallery. In app captures may instead appear under Movies/Instagram. App private cache under Android/data/com.instagram.android is not a usable backup.

iOS
Files > Downloads

Safari downloads sit in Files under Downloads unless you changed Safari settings. Allow save to Photos if you want camera roll copies. Data exports via Settings > Your activity > Download your information arrive as JSON or HTML archives.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my downloaded Reel not in gallery?

It likely sits in Download, which gallery skips. Open Files, move it to DCIM or Pictures, and it appears on the next media scan. Pixel owners can also enable the Download folder in Google Photos.

Where is a full Instagram data export?

Request it in app under profile menu > Your activity > Download your information, choose download to device, then open the resulting archive from Downloads. Keep it private since it bundles account history.
