Where Are iPhone Voice Memos Stored?
Voice Memos live inside the app's private container, reachable only through share sheets and Files exports.
Last updated
Voice Memos keep recordings in a sandboxed container no file manager reaches, following the TikTok drafts pattern of app private storage. The Files app never lists them directly.
Everything flows through the share sheet: duplicate, trim, export to Files, or send elsewhere. iCloud sync moves memos between personal devices when enabled. Unsynced memos live and die with the phone and its backups.
Where iOS stores this, by platform
/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/[Voice Memos]/Documents
Sandboxed per install with no user browsable path. Export through the share sheet to Files or AirDrop; files arrive as .m4a.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a memo onto my computer?
Open the memo, tap share, and save to Files or AirDrop it out. The container path stays hidden by design. Transferred files arrive as plain .m4a playable anywhere.
Are trims and deletes permanent?
Edits trim non destructively with undo available, and recently deleted memos wait thirty days in a recover folder. Permanent deletion only happens after that window or manual purge.
