Where Does the itch.io App Store Data?

itch app data folders on Windows, macOS and Linux with downloads, butler and game installs.

Last updated

The itch app keeps its database, download cache and butler staging in a per-platform config folder, while game installs default into an apps subdirectory you can relocate. Library metadata without the games is small and quick to back up.

Installed games dwarf everything else, so point the install location at a big drive during setup. Copy the data folder to preserve login, filters and download history.

Where itch.io stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\itch

Holds the library database, download cache and butler staging. Games default under %APPDATA%\itch\apps unless relocated in settings. Copy the folder with the app closed to migrate login and history.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/itch

Same database and cache role with installs in an apps subfolder. Reach it through Finder Go > Go to Folder.

Linux
~/.config/itch

Same layout as the other builds. Confirm the apps install path in settings before assuming the default.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move itch.io games to another drive?

Change the install location in app settings for future downloads, then move existing apps folders and relink them. The database above tracks install paths, so update it by re-scanning.

Will reinstalling the itch app delete my games?

Only if they live in the default apps folder you wipe. Relocated libraries survive; the data folder backup restores login and history.
