Where Does iwd Store Known Networks?

iwd stores known Wi-Fi networks as .psk files in /var/lib/iwd, one per SSID with the passphrase inside.

Last updated

iwd keeps network data in /var/lib/iwd rather than a single config file. Each known SSID gets its own .psk file with security settings and the passphrase. The main daemon config stays separate in /etc/iwd/main.conf.

That split confuses newcomers from wpa_supplicant. There is no network block list to edit. Add networks through iwctl and iwd writes the files itself, which keeps formatting consistent across versions.

Where iwd stores this, by platform

Linux
/var/lib/iwd

One .psk file per known SSID with plaintext passphrases. Main daemon options live in /etc/iwd/main.conf instead. Keep the folder root only.

Frequently asked questions

How do I forget a Wi-Fi network in iwd?

Delete the matching SSID.psk file with iwd stopped, or use station forget-network in iwctl. The daemon drops the network on next scan. Reconnecting prompts for the key again.

Where is the saved Wi-Fi password?

Open the SSID.psk file as root. The [Security] section holds a Passphrase entry in plaintext. Keep /var/lib/iwd root only, since every known key sits there.
