Where Does JetBrains Rider Store Settings and Caches?

Rider splits IDE config, plugins, caches and logs across versioned JetBrains folders on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Last updated

Rider follows the standard JetBrains layout with versioned folders like Rider2026.2. Keymaps, color schemes and ReSharper layers live in config, plugins beside them, while indexes occupy a separate system folder with logs next to it.

Solution specific settings are a different layer: the .idea folder and .sln.DotSettings files travel with the repo, not the global config. Match the version number in the path to your installed release. Wipe only the system folder to fix indexes; settings survive untouched.

Where JetBrains Rider stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\JetBrains\Rider2026.2

Config, plugins and ReSharper GlobalSettingsStorage.DotSettings. System caches and logs under %LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\Rider2026.2. Version number matches your release.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/Rider2026.2

Config here, caches in ~/Library/Caches/JetBrains, logs in ~/Library/Logs/JetBrains. Relocate any root via idea.config.path in custom properties.

Linux
~/.config/JetBrains/Rider2026.2

Config here, plugins under ~/.local/share/JetBrains, caches under ~/.cache/JetBrains. Old version caches prune automatically after long idle periods.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Rider settings to a new computer?

Copy the config folder XMLs (keymaps, colors, templates) with Rider closed on both ends, or use File > Manage IDE Settings > Export. Reinstall plugins from the marketplace. Solution settings live in .idea and travel with the repo.

Where is the Rider cache if indexing breaks?

Delete the system folder for your version while Rider is closed. Config and plugins stay. Rider rebuilds indexes on next launch, which takes a while on big solutions but fixes most broken highlighting.
