Where Does JoinMarket Store Wallets and Config?

JoinMarket keeps config, encrypted wallets and logs in a home dotfolder. Backup set and schedule notes.

Last updated

JoinMarket roots everything in a dotfolder in home. The main config, encrypted wallet files, per-bot logs and scheduler state all live there. A datadir flag relocates the tree per command for isolated setups.

Seeds on paper outrank every file: wallets recover from words while config and logs do not. Keep the encrypted wallet files with the config for convenience, but treat the written seed as the real backup. Never delete scheduler files mid-tumble; interrupted runs need them to resume.

Where JoinMarket stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.joinmarket

Holds joinmarket.cfg, wallets/*.jmdat, logs with statements and TUMBLE schedule files, plus internal commitment data. Same home-relative tree on Mac and Windows. Override per run with --datadir. Jam logs mirror under logs with walletd names.

Frequently asked questions

What do I back up for JoinMarket?

Seed words on paper first, then the wallet files with joinmarket.cfg. Scheduler files matter mid-tumble; logs carry statements. Commitment data rebuilds and needs no backup.

Where are JoinMarket wallet files?

In the wallets subfolder as encrypted .jmdat files. They need their seeds for recovery on a fresh machine. Keep file copies for convenience and paper seeds for disasters.

Can I run two JoinMarket setups apart?

Yes with --datadir pointing each invocation at its own tree. Config, wallets and logs stay separated per folder. Mixing one tree across networks or accounts invites address reuse.
