Where Does Jujutsu Store Its Config File?
jj reads user config from ~/.config/jj/config.toml on Unix and %APPDATA%\jj\config.toml on Windows, shown exactly by jj config path.
Last updated
Jujutsu layers several config files, and the user-level one is the file you will actually edit. On Linux and macOS it is ~/.config/jj/config.toml. On Windows it is %APPDATA%\jj\config.toml. Edit it with jj config edit --user and you never need the literal path at all.
Repo and workspace configs are deliberately kept outside the repo for security. Ask jj where they are with jj config path --repo or --workspace instead of guessing under .jj. Later layers override earlier ones when settings disagree.
Where Jujutsu stores this, by platform
~/.config/jj/config.toml
Preferred location; $HOME/.jjconfig.toml also loads for compatibility, and conf.d/*.toml beside config.toml merges in lexicographic order.
~/.config/jj/config.toml
Same XDG-style path as Linux, which surprises Mac users expecting Application Support. Manage it with jj config edit --user rather than by hand.
%APPDATA%\jj\config.toml
Paste %APPDATA%\jj into Explorer. JJ_CONFIG overrides all default locations when set, using ; as the separator for multiple paths.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my actual jj config file?
Run jj config path --user. That prints the real file for your platform and setup, including any JJ_CONFIG override, so trust it over any remembered path.
Can I point jj at a different config location?
Set JJ_CONFIG to a TOML file or a directory of TOML files, joined with : on Unix or ; on Windows. While set, it replaces the default locations entirely instead of merging with them.
