Where Does Juliaup Store Julia Versions?
Juliaup stores installed Julia versions and its own config under ~/.julia/juliaup, movable with the JULIAUP_DEPOT_PATH variable.
Last updated
Juliaup piggybacks on Julia's depot layout instead of inventing its own. By default everything lands in a juliaup folder inside ~/.julia: the downloaded toolchains, the version database, and juliaup.json with your channel choices. Julia packages share the same depot but live outside the juliaup folder.
One variable moves the lot. Set JULIAUP_DEPOT_PATH to an absolute path and Juliaup nests its folder there instead. Older Juliaup builds honored JULIA_DEPOT_PATH for this; current ones ignore it, so use the Juliaup-specific name.
Where Juliaup stores this, by platform
~/.julia/juliaup
Toolchains, versiondb JSON, and juliaup.json all sit here. Julia packages share ~/.julia but outside this folder. JULIAUP_DEPOT_PATH relocates the juliaup folder; the target directory must already exist.
~/.julia/juliaup
Same depot layout as Linux. Homebrew and manual installs agree on this spot. Completions live nearby and regenerate with juliaup completions if your shell integration goes missing.
%USERPROFILE%\.julia\juliaup
The Windows equivalent of ~/.julia/juliaup. Set JULIAUP_DEPOT_PATH to an absolute path to move it, for example onto a larger drive. JULIA_DEPOT_PATH no longer affects Juliaup placement.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move Julia versions to another disk?
Set JULIAUP_DEPOT_PATH to an absolute path and Juliaup creates a juliaup folder there on next run. Move the old juliaup folder contents across first to avoid redownloading every version.
How do I see which Julia versions are installed?
Run juliaup list to see installed channels and versions. The binaries sit under the juliaup home folder, and juliaup.json next to them records which channel each one belongs to.
