Where Does kew Store Config and Library?

kew keeps kewrc plus themes in the OS config dir, while the library database and live settings sit in state.

Last updated

kew splits config from state on purpose. kewrc (keybindings, paths, visuals) plus themes and layouts live in the config dir and are yours to edit. The music database (Library.dat) and anything you flip inside the app land in the state dir instead.

Edit kewrc only with kew closed, or the running instance wins. Deleting kewrc is the supported reset: a new default appears on next launch, though without any newer options merged into your old copy.

Where kew stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\kew

kewrc, themes, layouts. State (Library.dat, kewstaterc) sits separately under %LOCALAPPDATA%\kew. Edit config with kew closed.

macOS
~/Library/Preferences/kew

Config in ~/Library/Preferences/kew/, state in ~/Library/Application Support/kew. The man page FILES section documents both trees.

Linux
~/.config/kew

Config in ~/.config/kew/, state in ~/.local/state/kew/. The '.' key saves the playing song into a kew favorites.m3u next to the music.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change kew's music folder?

Run kew path "your-music-folder" (or edit the path line in kewrc with kew closed). A fresh default regenerates if you delete kewrc entirely.

My kewrc edits survive but volume and toggles reset. Why?

Because in-app tweaks go to kewstaterc, not kewrc. Your hand edits stay clean; runtime changes accumulate in the state file the app owns.
