Where Are Kindle Books Stored?
Where the Kindle app keeps downloaded books on Windows, Mac and Android, including the new Microsoft Store app and the Mac container.
Last updated
Kindle books are not normal files. The app pulls them into a folder of its own, names each one with a code like B0043M4ZH0 instead of the title, and keeps them wrapped in DRM, so a directory full of books is unreadable until you open it in the Kindle app.
Where that folder sits has changed more than once. Kindle for PC still defaults to Documents\My Kindle Content, a new Microsoft Store app for Windows landed in June 2026 with a completely different path, and the Mac app now writes into a sandbox container instead of the old My Kindle Content folder.
The reliable move on desktop is to read the path out of the app's own settings rather than trust a written-down one. Both apps show it, and both let you point them somewhere else.
Where Amazon Kindle stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\My Kindle Content
The default for the classic Kindle for PC. Tools > Options > Content shows the live path and has the Change Folder button. The Microsoft Store app released on June 2, 2026 stores downloads in C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Packages\AMZNKindle.AmazonKindleReadingApp_m1sc522ngdk36\LocalState\Classic\Content instead, changeable under Settings > Manage File Storage > Change Folder.
~/Library/Containers/com.amazon.Lassen/Data/Library/eBooks
The Mac App Store build (Kindle 7.x) keeps one subfolder per book, named after the ASIN, inside this container. Reach it with Finder > Go > Go to Folder since Library is hidden. Older builds used ~/Library/Containers/kindle/Data/Library/eBooks, ~/Library/Containers/com.amazon.Kindle/Data/Library/Application Support/Kindle/My Kindle Content, or ~/Library/Application Support/Kindle/My Kindle Content. Preferences > General > Content Folder shows whichever one your install uses.
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files/
Purchased books sit in this private app folder, one subfolder per title. Android 11 and later block normal file managers from opening Android/data at all, and the files are DRM-locked regardless, so there is little to do here. Some current builds report com.amazon.kindlefc instead. Books you send to your Kindle by email land in a plain kindle folder on internal storage.
Frequently asked questions
Where are my Kindle books on my PC?
In Documents\My Kindle Content for the classic Kindle for PC, one subfolder per book. The June 2026 Microsoft Store app uses AppData\Local\Packages\AMZNKindle.AmazonKindleReadingApp_m1sc522ngdk36\LocalState\Classic\Content instead. Tools > Options > Content shows which path your install uses.
Why can't I open the files in my Kindle folder?
They are AZW or KFX files tied to your Amazon account, and the names are ASINs like B0043M4ZH0_EBOK rather than titles. Copies will not open on another reader or account. For titles Amazon marks as DRM-free you can download an EPUB or PDF from Manage Your Content and Devices instead.
Where are Kindle books stored on a Mac?
For the current App Store app, ~/Library/Containers/com.amazon.Lassen/Data/Library/eBooks, with one folder per book named by ASIN. Older versions used a My Kindle Content folder in a different container. Preferences > General > Content Folder points at whichever location your install is using.
