Where Does Cool Reader Store Books and Settings?

Cool Reader keeps settings, caches, and book databases in a cr3 folder on device storage. Your books stay wherever you put them.

Last updated

Cool Reader separates your books from its own data. Books live wherever you placed them on storage, including inside zip archives it reads directly. The app data (settings, reading positions, caches, library databases) lives in a cr3 folder at the storage root.

That split makes repair easy. Update crashes usually come from stale cache or a corrupt library database, both inside the cr3 folder. Extra themes go in backgrounds and textures subfolders of the same tree. Desktop builds for Windows and Linux use the same cr3 data layout beside the program files.

Where Cool Reader stores this, by platform

Android
/sdcard/.cr3

Settings, reading positions, cache, and library sqlite files. The folder may be named cr3 instead of .cr3 on some installs.

Android
/sdcard/Books

Your books stay here unless you moved them. Cool Reader scans storage, so any folder works.

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Books

Windows builds keep the same cr3 data layout beside the program. Point the app at your ebook folder on first run.

Frequently asked questions

Cool Reader crashes on open after an update. What do I delete?

Delete the cache subfolder and the sqlite database files inside the cr3 folder. That clears crashes from bad cached renders without touching your books.

How do I move Cool Reader to a new phone?

Copy your book folders plus the whole cr3 folder to the same spots. Settings, reading positions, and the library database travel together.
